"We can recommend a program called ROS 2000 by a Canadian company Digital
Rez. I wrote our first system 18 years ago using DBase II on a CPM
machine. When DOS became the business platform and we needed greater
flexibility than what I had written we switched to a stand alone system
and gradually worked our way to a network. We outgrew the software which
was hardly being supported and began a search for much more heavy duty
software that would grow with us. We looked at Lodging Touch which is
ridiculously expensive ($27,000) but very flexible, although not fully
meeting our needs (for example most of our rooms qualify as their own
individual room type - some systems limit the number of types). We might
have gone with them, but they were installing Best Westerns or some chain
throughout the country. We checked Resort System, INSI, and several
vacation home software packages as well as several others. But all of them
suffered from lack of flexibility and I went on the net and found Digital
Rez. If its Canadian, I figured it had to be good. Joan - my partner is
Canadian. It had the flexibility we were looking for. It is an
outstanding system, allowing guest histories and specialized custom data
fields that we can create ourselves. Plus they were able to take our
existing data base and merge into their system."
"If you would like, I would be happy to talk about it. But I need to tell
you that the reason that I have responded is because customer service is
very important whenever you are dealing with complicated software,
especially on a network. All programs present problems, particularly on
initial installation and during updates. The Digital Rez team works with
my staff - helps them work through problems, if they occur. If necessary
they will use PC Anywhere to "massage" the data bases or check the
functioning of Windows NT or SQL - or whatever is needed. The other day,
we had a significant problem after an update. Their technician fixed the
problem and then asked one of my staff to load the back-up data base. He
checked and there wasn't one because another of our employees had failed
to to assign someone else to back up the data base while he was out of
town. The last back-up was nine days before. Digital Rez fixed it and we
did not have to re-enter one record! This was what I expected - but
truthfully we often do not get such service. I can compare their service
to that of other companies - for example (name of company withheld by DR) whose software runs our
dining room. (name of company withheld by DR) has bad service."
